Agreement with Italy/ Gjadri and Shengjini, ready for asylum seekers

Work on the immigrant centers in Lezha, which will be under Italian jurisdiction, has been completed.

The first waiting place in the port of Shengjin was ready for a long time, while the one in Gjadër was delivered on Wednesday to the Italian authorities for final testing.

It is about a detention center for asylum seekers with 880 places and a prison with 20 places.

It is expected that these structures will start functioning within a week to welcome the first African asylum seekers rescued at sea who will undergo accelerated border procedures in Albanian territory.

The Gjadri area was a very degraded base of the former Albanian Air Force, so the Italian engineers engaged in restoration and preparatory works that lasted for months, with the activation of the water supply networks and the land that had to be consolidated.

There are now perimeter walls around the buildings, perimeter cameras and security equipment. Italian jurisdiction applies there and Italian police forces will guarantee order.

In these centers there will also be UNHCR staff to monitor the respect of refugees' rights. Asylum applications will be reviewed within 4 weeks. Video conference links are planned with the Rome court for custody evaluation sessions./ CNA
