The war with nature, the Buna River becomes the arena of the training operation!

The international training operation "Flood North Albania" marked the climax today with the demonstration of interventions to help isolated residents, a flood situation. The operation took place on the Buna River, in Shkodra, and included several components: A rescue operation was demonstrated for several residents isolated from the water, the rescue of injured people, the intervention to save livestock, the intervention to isolate the consequences of the flooding of a chemical fertilizer and pesticide warehouse, etc. Part of the exercise were also helicopters of the Albanian army, which executed a delicate rescue operation of people who were drowning.

The exercise was large-scale and included the emergency health service, police forces, the army and the Red Cross. Albania was the host country of this exercise, which is attended by 13 partners from the Balkan region, but not only. This exercise aims to test the preparation of civil protection forces in case of floods, the readiness of local institutions and the coordination between the host country and aid coming from other countries.

The exercise is also an organizational challenge for the National Civil Protection Agency of Albania. Its Director, Mr. Haki Çako, said that this is a very important step to perfect cooperation between countries in the region, to jointly face natural disasters.

This project is funded by DG ECHO, the European Union and started in January 2024 and ends in December 2025 and its leader is the National Civil Protection Agency of Albania. and this partnership includes, in addition to Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, North Macedonia and Bulgaria./ CNA
