A WOMAN revealed doctors left a device "the size of a dinner plate" in her stomach after she gave birth by caesarean section.
The Alexis wound retractor - a soft tubal instrument used to keep surgical wounds open - was found 18 months after the initial operation at Auckland City Hospital.
During this time, the woman had suffered from extreme pain.
Health regulators have condemned the public hospital system.
The Alexis Wound Puller is a large object made of transparent plastic attached to two rings.
It is usually removed during surgery before the skin is sewn back together.
Because it is a "non-radio-opaque item," it was not picked up on an X-ray.
