Lamallari gathers prison directors/ Messages are revealed

The Minister of Justice, Besfort Lamallari, held a meeting this Friday with all the country's prison directors to discuss the progress of the penitentiary system, security, working conditions and efforts to improve standards in the treatment of prisoners and detainees.

During his speech, Lamallari announced that the new budget will include salary indexation for all prison system employees, as well as an increase in salaries for health personnel in the country's prisons, specifically an increase of 12 thousand lek for doctors and 55 thousand lek for nurses. "The government's attention to the police and prison staff has not been lacking and will not be lacking," the minister said.

Another important issue discussed was the closure of the Bënçë Prison in Tepelena, an inevitable decision due to unacceptable treatment and security conditions, also highlighted by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture. Lamallari stressed that the decision was fair and necessary to adapt to European Union standards. The employees of this institution have been offered the opportunity to continue their service in other prisons, starting with Fier, with guaranteed free transportation.

The Minister also mentioned the prison master plan, which aims to transform the management system of this sector and bring standards closer to those of the European Union. He announced that during his visit to Italy he had discussed with his Italian counterpart, Carlo Nordio, support for technological and rehabilitation projects to improve the penitentiary system.

"We must have a system similar to EU standards for the treatment of prisoners," Lamallari said, emphasizing security, respect for the law, and improving working conditions./ CNA
