Commissioner Kos: Albania has a real opportunity to join the EU by 2030

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, gave an interview to the German television station 'WELT TV'. Kos emphasized the European Union's enlargement process, stressing that the region and the process are now a priority for the European Commission.

While mentioning the EU's support for Ukraine's membership, Kos was also asked about the acceleration of the membership of several Western Balkan countries, where he focused on the process of each of the countries in the region.

Kos said that there is a real possibility for Albania to close negotiations within 2027 and join by 2030.

WELT:  Given the disappointment of some Western Balkan states regarding this relatively rapid rapprochement with Ukraine, how do you plan to ensure that countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina or North Macedonia do not feel left behind?

KOS :  I can understand the disappointment very well, because I also come from this area. And just to give you an idea, if Ukraine had to wait as long as North Macedonia, we would start negotiations with Ukraine in 2045. And that cannot happen. This also applies to the Western Balkan countries. They have to implement reforms. And there is another important element in the past. In recent years, enlargement has not been so important for the European Commission. It was not a priority. Now it is a priority. Even the member states say this. We have Montenegro and Albania, for example. They are doing very well. They are doing reforms. They are understanding the enlargement process as a transformation of their economy, including other areas in the country. And, for example, if things continue to go well, we could complete all negotiations with Montenegro by the end of 2026 and then with Albania by the end of 2027. This means that there is a realistic possibility that both countries could become our new members by 2030./CNA
