Former Socialist MP became Veliaj's lawyer/Dumani: He is in incompatible

SPAK Prosecutor Altin Dumani said today in the second substantive session taking place at the Special Court for the case against the arrested mayor of Tirana, that there is an inappropriate element in the appointment of Plarent Ndreca as Erion Veliaj's defense attorney.

According to Dumani, Ndreca's appointment is in conflict with the law because the former SP MP was questioned by the Prosecutor's Office during the investigation into this file.

"I will only focus on the defendant for whom the court must proceed, since the other defendants are present. Regarding the defendant Erion Veliaj, he has been informed about the hearing and has requested to be represented by his lawyer Plarent Ndreca. This lawyer was questioned in the context of this criminal proceeding, and we may be in the conditions of incompatibility of the defense, given that he was questioned during the preliminary investigation phase. As for Meriman Palushi, this defendant has been left without defense since his lawyer has withdrawn. A lawyer must be assigned to the defendant Meriman Palushi in the first place. Likewise, the defendant Ina Goxhaj has been informed about the hearing, a lawyer must be assigned to her in the first place. The first is not a request, but it is a circumstance, but we cannot remain without making her present before the court. For us, there is no problem in continuing the defense with Mr. Ndreca.
