Korça remains the district with no new cases of HIV-Aids and sexually transmitted diseases. This was announced by the social worker at the Local Health Unit in Korça, Nertila Sterjo.

Initially, she showed the role of this institution in the fight against infection with these diseases, which can have serious consequences in people's lives. This institution conducts numerous tests during the year, including voluntary tests which exceed the average of 600 such tests every year.

"Today is the 1st of December, the international day of the fight against HIV Aids. As always, the Local Health Care Unit Korcë organizes awareness-raising and informational activities, especially for the youth of 9-year-old and secondary schools. Every year we have increased the number of people tested, which is our main goal. In 2022, we count 692 people tested for HIV AIDS and STDs. For this year, until the end of October, we have 670 people tested, a figure that will increase until the end of the year. We also carry out Voluntary testing for poor young people is the most at-risk group to be infected. We have also focused on the treatment of pregnant women and the Roma and Egyptian community as a community at risk, but also those who use injectable drugs," she said.

Fortunately, for the southeastern region, in the period 2022-2023, no new cases of infection have been recorded, while even for the past years, the number of infections has been very small, counting only 4-5 cases.

"Our motto has been to keep Korça at zero levels of infections. There are definitely positive cases, but they are very few and this is to be appreciated thanks to the tests that make it possible to isolate the ringworm. The last two years we don't have positive rates. There are 4-5 positive cases in Korça from years ago, we always get tested, we talk. By having multiple tests, we minimize and break the chain of people who may be infected," she said further.
