Incinerators burn public funds/ A mafia scheme that is eroding citizens'

The project of incinerators for burning waste was sold as one of the innovative projects by the Albanian government, which according to the socialists would fundamentally change the way waste would be treated, while promising a cleaner Albania.

The concession contract was signed in August 2017 for 30 years, worth 430 million dollars, but it is expected to go up to 1 billion euros.

Seven years later, the government donated to the Albanians two facilities (the Elbasan and Fier incinerators), which do not play any role in the treatment of waste, and a third one, the one in Tirana, which not only does not exist as a facility, but is destroyed every days millions from the state budget.

Despite this, Prime Minister Edi Rama has refused to see what is visible, while expressing his conviction that the money wasted from the state budget; the officials, former ministers and mayors investigated, or arrested by SPAK, are not sufficient motives to accept that the incinerators are a real corrupt affair, which is eroding the citizens' pockets every day.

"I would go back to that process a thousand times, I would do it a thousand times. Tirana, Fieri and Elbasan are today cleaner and safer," said Rama.

The country's major cities face high waste treatment costs and are facing an environmental emergency, as waste is piling up in landfills next to incinerators that are at least non-working and at most non-existent. / CNA
