International Volunteer Day/ Rama: My grandmother used to tell me 'blessed

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared a message today in the framework of International Volunteer Day.

Invited to an event in Tirana, Rama stated that volunteerism and charity are not gestures, but discipline and reaching out through hope.

"I would like to say a few words about hope and charity. Hope must be trained. Hope is neither a lucky star above our heads nor a vague promise that tomorrow will be better than today."

Hope is a muscle and like any muscle it only grows when trained and becomes stronger only when exposed to difficulties and obstacles. Therefore, hope when untrained is fragile and does not take you far. Trained hope is the force that drives us forward in search of what we want to achieve for ourselves and for others. Charity is misunderstood and many imagine it as an act of giving something that is not needed, but I believe that true charity is not generosity for what you have in excess, but it is generosity with yourself.

I heard from my grandmother that it is said 'blessed is he who gives and not he who receives' and charity is a decision to open oneself to the other and not to see him as a stranger and as a burden when he is in difficulty but as a mirror when the measure of humanity that you have is reflected. Charity is not a gesture, it is discipline, therefore charity without hope turns into an insult. It is offensive to everyone when someone throws something at someone who has extended a hand and does not even look back, "- said Rama./CNA
