Between competition from the Internet and social networks and shrinking advertising budgets as a result of the economic slowdown, the media business is growing year after year.

The data published by INSTAT show that the "Activity of publications and productions of programs" reached 7.6 billion ALL, or about 72 million euros, in 2022. This is the highest level of income ever recorded by the media in the country. Compared to a year ago, the annual turnover of this segment has increased by about 12%.

The main source of income of this segment is the advertising expenses carried out by the various businesses.

The activity of publications and productions of programs employed almost 2,500 people in 2022, with a minimum increase of 4.5%, according to INSTAT.

Televisions dominate the market

Other data processed by Monitor from the revenues declared by the main media in the country show that the market is dominated by large televisions. For the 10 televisions that have reported data, the total revenue in 2022 was 5.6 billion ALL (about 52 million euros), with a contraction of 4.6% on an annual basis.

Televisions generate in this way about 72% of the income from the activity of publications and productions of programs. The rest goes to print media, online media, radio.

In the television segment, Klan and Top Channel continue to dominate, with over 60% of the total turnover and are the only ones reporting turnover levels from 12-18 million euros. For other operators, the maximum limit is around 4 million euros.

"TV Klan" has continued to be the largest television operator in the country, by revenue, reporting an annual turnover of nearly 2.1 billion lek in 2022, with a slight increase of 1.4% compared to the previous year. according to official balance sheet data.

"Top Channel" has again retained the second place, with a total income of 1.44 billion ALL. Compared to a year ago, this television recorded a 9% decrease in revenue.

"Vizion Plus" has returned to third place, after dropping to fourth in 2021. Its revenue was 436 million ALL, with an expansion of 20.4%, having the best performance in this segment.

"TV A 2" dropped to fourth place from third place a year ago. Revenues increased by 6% to 414 million ALL.

"News 24" has reported a decrease in income by 12.9%, to 347 million ALL.

"ABC News" recorded a contraction of 14.5% of the annual circulation, going down to 346.7 million.

"Euronews" declared an income of 216 million ALL (-24%).

"Syri TV" was the only informational television that declared a 15% increase in revenue to 145 million ALL, but resulted in a loss.

Chip: 10 portals are added every three months

INSTAT reports that in 2022, compared to 2011, the number of enterprises in Publishing and program production activities has increased tenfold, reaching 552. The growth was rapid since 2011, as a result of the expansion of online media. Opening a portal was easy, as it required minimal investment.

Their number has grown rapidly in the last two years. Aleksandër Çipa, head of the Association of Journalists, told Monitor that currently the number of portals in the country has reached 748. "Every three months at least 10 new ones are opened", he claims. Some of them are registered as NGOs, others as media businesses, but there are also unregistered ones.
