Media freedom advocates have sharply criticized the European Commission over funding provided for the creation of a joint editorial office with European media agencies. 

According to several Brussels media, including EuObserver and EurActiv, the so-called 'European Editorial Office' has received a grant to create a joint space for 16 agencies in Brussels. Part of the European Editorial Board, which is led by the German agency DPA, are also the AFP of France and the Italian ANSA. 

Por skandali qëndron te fakti se pjesë e projektit janë edhe organizatat mediatike ballkanike Tanjug nga Serbia dhe ATSH nga Shqipëria. 

Pikërisht këto të fundit nuk shihen si agjenci të pavarura mediatike, por si zëdhënëse të qeverive. Kështu deklaroi Flutura Kusari nga Qendra Europiane për Lirinë e Shtypit dhe medias në Lajpcig të Gjermanisë.

“Agjentët e marrëdhënieve me publikun nuk meritojnë mbështetje nga fondet e BE-së,” tha ajo.

Por Komisioni Europian ka hedhur poshtë këto kritika.

Një zëdhënës tha se këto agjenci, njësoj si agjencitë e tjera, duhet të respektojnë detyrimet e tyre si pjesë e Redaksisë Europiane, tha ai.
Tanjug, ish-agjencia zyrtare e Jugosllavisë, tani është në pronësi të Taçno, një kompani me lidhje të ngushta me presidentin serb, Aleksandar Vuçiç, shkruan EuObserver. 

Tanjug has received a significant number of government contracts, while reporting mainly in favor of the ruling party.

Christian Mihr from Reporters Without Borders says it is very important that these agencies are independent.

Kusari stressed that the EU should be careful about which media in the region it funds.

According to her, the EU should provide funding for projects that bring together independent and professional journalists who meet ethical standards.
