The ship "Mount Whitney" in Porto Romano/ VanHorn: Symbolizes

The US Charge d'Affaires in our country, Nancy VanHorn, visited the ship "Mount Whitney" anchored in Porto Romano.

VanHorn said the United States encourages the development of a naval base in Albania with deepwater cargo port capacity. Nancy VanHorn stated that the reinforcement of Porto Romano serves the region and Europe.

"The USS Mount Whitney anchoring here in Porto Romano symbolizes the next phase of Albania's military modernization. The United States fully welcomes and encourages the development of a naval base in Albania with deepwater cargo port capacity right here in Porto Romano. Albania's investment in strengthening Porto Romano will demonstrate to the region, and all of Europe, Albania's ability to be a true leader in the NATO Alliance," VanHorn stated .

The Chargé d'Affaires said that Albania is a vital asset for NATO due to its strategic location.

Albania is already a vital asset for NATO due to its strategic location. But by reinforcing Porto Romano and connecting it with roads and railways, Albania will become a crucial route for a possible future operation on NATO's Eastern Flank.

Strengthening Porto Romano will help secure maritime lines of communication and stabilize the transport of military materials across borders. It will also send a clear signal to all those seeking to destabilize transatlantic security: We are capable, we are united, and we are committed to collective defense on land, in the air, and at sea.

Beyond the security benefits, strengthening Porto Romano will contribute to Albania's broader economic prosperity – from increasing trade to fostering new infrastructure projects that create jobs.

Currently, the deep-water ports that Allied naval vessels like the USS Mount Whitney need to resupply or provide their crews with rest and relaxation are few in number in the Adriatic.

Strengthening Porto Romano is a grand but realistic aspiration, one that requires a strong commitment, especially a significant investment of national funds. At the NATO Summit in The Hague this summer, Allies pledged to spend 5 percent of GDP on defense. Committing national funds to Porto Romano will bring Albania closer to this commitment and will open the door to multinational investment in Porto Romano, as well.

"President Trump has emphasized that all Allies must meet their commitments and increase defense spending to meet today's challenges and tomorrow's threats. The development of a deepwater port facility at Porto Romano with secure berths, cargo handling facilities, and rail and road connections helps answer this call. It will enhance regional security, strengthen NATO's Eastern Bloc, and foster economic growth," VanHorn said./ CNA
