The government approves the draft law on integrated waste management

The government has approved the draft law on integrated waste management.

The draft law aims to create a waste management system in the Republic of Albania.

This draft law aims to create a sustainable waste management system in the Republic of Albania, aiming to protect the environment and public health, as well as the more efficient use of natural resources, supporting the transition towards a circular economy.

The draft law sets out the rules for the functioning of the waste management system, focusing on:

• preventing or reducing waste;
• minimizing the negative impacts of its creation and treatment;
• increasing efficiency in the use of resources.

Some special categories are excluded from the scope of this law, such as emissions into the atmosphere, untouched lands, clean soils used for construction, radioactive waste, decommissioned ships, waste from mining activities, used waters and certain animal by-products.

This draft law is aligned with Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council "On waste", ensuring the harmonization of national legislation with European Union standards./ CNA
