3 world dictators against Zai Fundo/ Historian Butka: The prominent Albanian
Lazar Fundo

The life of Llazar Fundo, a representative of the intellectuals who supported communism but who later became disillusioned and became one of the strongest opponents of the regime and even its victim, had many climaxes and was dramatic.

Also known as Zai Fundo, 80 years after the shooting, he is regarded as the creator and signatory of the ventotene manifesto, a document on which the first steps of European union were based.

In an interview for CNA, historian and writer Uran Butka, told a part of the life of the bottom and why he turned against communism.

"Zai Fundo is one of the prominent personalities of the Albanian and European world. He played a very important role in the democratic movement of the 1930-1940s in Albania and Europe. After the murder of Avni Rustemi, he was elected chairman of the society "Bashkimi" He then emigrated to Europe and, together with other political émigrés, took part in the European press. Then he went to the Soviet Union, invited there, to study and get to know the Soviet experience more closely, but he became disillusioned with the Stalinist tyranny. and criticized this system. From Moscow, he wrote to Fan Noli in America. "Communism that we idealized as Christ, surpasses Satan in terms of evil."

Precisely for this reason, the Comintern sentenced him to death, as he sentenced political opponents, but he was able to escape by going to the underground catacombs and took refuge in several countries in Europe, although he was followed by Soviet KGB agents.

He could not remain silent in front of the crimes committed by Stalin and therefore denounced him and became one of the main denouncers of the Stalinist regime. This is the reason why he was persecuted not only by the KGB but also by Tito's agents," said the historian.

But who condemned Lazar Fundo?

Lazar Fundon condemned Komiterni, which had its center in Moscow. He, through Tito, demanded that Llazar Fundo be annihilated, and Tito, constantly in letters, asked Enver Hoxha to annihilate Llazar Fundo as a renegade of communism. Enver Hoxha ordered that Fundo be executed. He ordered the first corporal to follow Fundo and kill him, shoot him. They arrested and executed him, and even removed the grave markers.

Zai Fundo was executed on September 23, 1944, but his work as one of the main denouncers of the inhumane regime in Albania and beyond and all his activity against communism is today part of not only Albanian but also European history. / CNA
