18 years since the Gërdec tragedy/ Families demand justice

This Sunday marks 18 years since the Gërdec tragedy, one of the worst disasters in Albania in peacetime, where over 26 people lost their lives and hundreds more were injured, while the area was destroyed by the explosion of ammunition.

18 years later, the trial for responsibility for this tragedy continues at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime, where former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, is accused.

The charge against him relates to the decision to allow the dismantling of ammunition by a private company, near residential areas, without strict supervision and without sufficient security.

The victims' families say that the process has been politically obstructed and that delays in the trial have lasted for years, including periods when Mediu enjoyed parliamentary immunity.

They demand justice, emphasizing that it is not about revenge, but about ensuring that such a tragedy does not happen again.

On the other hand, former Minister Mediu has denied any responsibility, including for the explosion and the loss of life, and has presented arguments that the process is unfounded and political.

Family members dispute these claims, stressing that his decisions played a direct role in the cause-and-effect chain that led to the disaster./ CNA
