Otherwise known as 'eye tattoos', keratopigmentation is becoming increasingly popular with many experts warning of unwanted effects.

Imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a pair of blue, emerald green, or golden brown eyes staring back at you instead of your natural brown color. A growing number of people around the world are choosing to make this dream a reality by undergoing a cosmetic procedure called keratochromia - a €12,000 operation that permanently changes a person's eye colour. While many patients enjoy the transformative results, experts warn of potential risks associated with this trend.

What is keratochromatization?

Keratochromoplasty (KTP) is a surgical technique originally developed for medical purposes, such as treating corneal scarring or improving the appearance of deformed eyes. In recent years, however, it has gained ground as a selective aesthetic procedure. The surgery involves implanting pigment into the stratum corneum, the clear, dome-shaped surface, to achieve the desired eye color. Unlike contact lenses or iris implants, keratochromatosis provides a permanent change, with no need for maintenance.

-Vision problems: Corneal clouding, sensitivity to light, or blurriness may result from the procedure.

-Challenges of reversibility: While some pigments can be removed, others can leave permanent scarring or discoloration.

The lack of widespread legislation complicates the matter, as many clinics offering keratochromic surgery operate outside the oversight of established medical boards, resulting in variable standards of surgical expertise and post-operative care.

Although keratopigmentation is definitely on the rise, it's definitely not a decision to take lightly. Prospective patients should thoroughly research the procedure, seek out reputable surgeons, and weigh the risks against their motivations. As the trend grows, the medical community is calling for stronger regulations and more comprehensive studies to ensure patient safety.
