While artificial intelligence is making rapid advances, a group of experts is calling for a pause. They have warned about the negative effects that this development can have on society and humanity.
A number of technology leaders have signed a letter calling on artificial intelligence developers to stop their work for six months.
The letter warns of potential dangers to society and humanity as tech giants such as Google and Microsoft race to build artificial intelligence programs that can learn independently.
The letter was organized by the non-profit Future of Life Institute – which according to the EU transparency register is largely funded by Musk – and follows UK and EU efforts to work out how to regulate this rapidly advancing technology .
The British government published a document on Wednesday giving an idea of ??its approach, but said it would "avoid draconian legislation that could stifle innovation". EU lawmakers have also held talks about the need to set rules for AI. The EU fears that artificial intelligence could be used to spread harmful misinformation and make entire professions unnecessary./ DW
