In a series of studies published in Nature Astronomy , astronomers warn that the increase in light pollution caused by the ever-increasing number of satellites orbiting the Earth is an "unprecedented global threat to nature".
The number of satellites currently orbiting Earth has doubled since 2019, and several more are due to launch soon, adding thousands more to an already congested orbit 2,000 km above the surface.
This can cause a chain reaction of collisions that will produce smaller and smaller pieces of debris.
Astronomers estimate that the darkest part of the sky will become 7.5% brighter over the next decade, hampering their work as it will reduce the number of stars they can see by 7.5%.
Consequently, it means that people will not be able to see important celestial events.
However, a bright night sky doesn't just pose problems for astronomers.
As astronomer Aparna Venkatesan of the University of San Francisco reports, it also threatens "our ancient relationship with the night sky"./ Adapted from CNA.al
