Failure to protect children's privacy / TikTok fined £12.7 million

TikTok has been fined £12.7 million for failing to protect children's privacy, the UK's data watchdog said.

An investigation by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) found the video-sharing app breached data protection law, adding that the breaches occurred between May 2018 and July 2020.

In September, the ICO sent TikTok a notice warning it of a potential fine.

"As a result, approximately one million children under the age of 13 were inappropriately given access to the platform, and TikTok collected and used their personal data. This means that their data may have been used to to track and profile them, potentially delivering harmful and inappropriate content”.

"Our fine of £12.7m reflects the serious impact their failings may have had," he said./REL
