UEFA has announced that it has opened an investigation to shed light on the case of Negreira, the former vice-president of the technical committee of Spanish referees, to whom the Blaugrana club has paid several million euros in recent years.

European football's top body explained that "in accordance with Article 31(4) of UEFA's Disciplinary Regulations, Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors have been appointed to conduct an investigation into a possible breach of UEFA's legal framework from FC Barcelona regarding the so-called 'Caso Negreira'".

If the Catalans are found guilty, then a penalty is expected that could exclude them from the Champions League competitions.
