The sad fall of Dele Alli, the midfielder towards retirement from football

One of the names once considered part of the bright future of English football, Dele Alli, is experiencing one of the most difficult declines in the career of a professional footballer.

The attacking midfielder, now 29, had his breakout season at Tottenham where he was named the Premier League's Young Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons, in 2016 and 2017. But the path his career took after these early successes has been fraught with setbacks, disappointments and instability.

Since his move to Everton in 2021, Alli has never quite recovered his form. He made just 13 Premier League appearances in two seasons with Liverpool. He moved to Turkish side Bersiktas, where he made little impact, and left quietly.

Last season he found himself in Italy, where newly promoted Serie A club Como decided to take a risk with him, bringing him closer in the January transfer window. But the adventure in the Italian championship proved almost non-existent. Dele Alli played only 10 minutes in a match against Milan, where he was sent off for a serious foul on Loftus-Cheek. After this episode, he was never activated again.

Meanwhile, Como has been very active in the summer transfer window, bringing in other midfielders, and coach Fabregas no longer includes Dele Alli in either the team's short-term or long-term plans.

"La Gazzetta dello Sport" reports that the English footballer is seriously considering the idea of retiring from professional football.

After a five-year spell marked by injuries, poor selection and a steady decline in performance, Dele Alli is facing a harsh reality.
