France went into Euro 2020 as the reigning world champions, but Didier Deschamps' side showed little of their potential and were knocked out by Switzerland in the round of 16, quickly bidding farewell to the tournament they won from Italy.

Kylian Mbappe, the star of PSG and the French national team, has revealed to Sports Illustrated an interesting behind-the-scenes story about the competition that was postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the pandemic.

"I was very close to withdrawing from the National Team. I could no longer play for people who thought I was a monkey... But then I took the time to think and those close to me started to encourage me.

Withdrawal would not be the right message, as I think I am an example to many people. I wanted to tell the younger generations that we are better than that," said the 23-year-old striker, who faced insults after losing the decisive penalty against Switzerland.
