Lost parents and overcame serious injury, story of Canada's hero

Stephen Eustaquio became Canada's hero at the 2026 World Cup, scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 win over South Africa in the 92nd minute. The goal secured Canada's qualification to the round of 16 and their first victory in a knockout match at the World Cup.

Born on December 21, 1996 in Leamington, Ontario to Portuguese parents, he began his career in the lower levels of Portuguese football. After stints with Os Nazarenos, Torreense, Leixoes and Chaves, Eustaquio moved to Cruz Azul in 2019, where he suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury.

His return took him to Pacos de Ferreira and then Porto, where he won several national trophies. That same year, he chose to represent Canada on the international stage. Before the 2026 World Cup, he was transferred on loan to Los Angeles, while in his personal life he coped with the loss of his mother in 2023 and his father in 2024.

The goal against South Africa is considered the most important moment of his career with the Canadian national team.
