FORMULA 1/ Verstappen triumphs in France and escapes for the title, Leklerk shuts him down at the barriers

2022-07-24 18:18:18, Sport CNA

Max Verstappen looks to be on his way to a second consecutive Formula 1 championship. The Dutch Red Bull driver won the French Grand Prix today and widened the gap to nearest pursuer Charles Leclerc, who crashed his Ferrari with barriers and ended the race without points.

In fact, the Ferrari driver made a fantastic start to the race, passing Verstappen at the start and holding the Red Bull driver back for many laps. The latter changed strategy and entered the pits, while Leklerk remained outside trying to manage the tires. But a wrong maneuver on the 18th lap took him off the track, crashing the car into the barriers, thus making it easier for the pursuers.

The introduction of the safety car meant that pit changes were quickly completed and so Verstappen found himself in first place, ahead of Hamilton and Perez. The positions wouldn't change until the final laps, when a virtual safety car helped Russell pass Perez and grab third place with just two laps to go.

The fifth place went to Sainz in the second Ferrari car, after developing a spectacular race, as he started from the 19th place and was the protagonist of many overtakes until he reached this position. Alonso took 6th place, followed by Norris, Okon, Ricciardo and Stroll who completed the points zone.

After today's race, Verstappen has a 69-point advantage over Leclerc in the overall drivers' standings, creating a significant margin of safety in the fight for the championship title.
