Unusually in the World Cup, qualification can be achieved even with... defeat

The new 48-team World Cup format has created some unusual scenarios ahead of the final group stage matches. With 12 groups and 32 teams qualifying for the knockout stage, the calculations for advancement have become more complex than in previous editions.

One of the most discussed cases is related to the match between Austria and Algeria, two teams that have 3 points each and that will play the last match of the group stage.

 As this match takes place after the other groups have been completed, both teams will know in advance what result they need to advance. In some combinations, even the loser of the challenge could secure qualification as one of the best third places.

The situation has drawn comparisons to the "Shame of Gijon" incident at the 1982 World Cup, where Austria and West Germany secured qualification with a score that eliminated Algeria. After that episode, FIFA decided that the final matches of each group would be played at the same time.

However, the new format has brought back discussions on strategic scenarios that could affect the teams' journey towards the knockout stage.
