The Polish tennis player surprises, trains with her mouth closed...

It was one of the images of previous practice sessions at the Masters 1000 in Toronto. Poland's Iga Swiatek, the world number 1, surprised in a training session with a tape placed in her mouth, preventing her from opening it.

It was the player herself, who later explained the reasons for this method, devised by her physical trainer, Maciej Ryszczuk, a perhaps unorthodox exercise that helps limit the amount of oxygen the tennis player inhales during training with the aim of improving endurance .

Thus, the Pole ensured that "it's harder to breathe when you only breathe through your nose and it's easier for my heart rate to increase," Swiatek told reporters, according to the WTA website. 

"I won't explain it perfectly because I'm not an expert. Sometimes I don't understand the things they tell me to do, but I've been doing it for a long time, so it was pretty easy for me."

This particular training method joins the list of aspects that the tennis player takes care of to improve her sports performance. The Pole travels with a full-time sports psychologist and her team uses medical instruments to measure her brain and heart activity for indicators of stress. In addition, some types of games develop puzzles that test the cognitive speed of the player.
