2023-08-08 17:43:12, Sport CNA

Yesterday evening there were bloody clashes between Greek and Croatian fans. In the program for today was the challenge between AEK and Dinamo Zagreb, valid for the third round of the Champions League.

But the fans started this confrontation 24 hours ago, as a 29-year-old AEK fan died from the fight between them. Meanwhile, 8 others were injured, while 98 were arrested by the police. Seeing the chaotic situation, UEFA made the decision to cancel the meeting between the two teams.

While it is already known that this match will be played on August 18 or 19, friendly fans will not be allowed to travel on the transfer. Consequently, Croatian fans are prohibited from following the challenge in Athens, as well as Greek fans in Croatia.

"UEFA expresses its regret in the strongest possible terms for the horrific incidents that took place last night in Athens and resulted in the loss of one life. Expressing our deepest condolences to the victim's family, to AEK and its fans, we want to reiterate that violence has no place in our sport and we expect those responsible for this terrible act to be arrested and brought to justice without delay.

After yesterday's violence and in consultation with the local authorities, UEFA has decided not to fulfill the conditions for the match between AEK Athens FC and GNK Dinamo to take place this evening.

In accordance with Article 26.01 of the UEFA Champions League 2023/24 Regulations, the match scheduled to be played tonight at the Agia Sofia Stadium in Athens is postponed.

The match Dinamo Zagreb-AEK in Zagreb will be played on Tuesday 15 August 2023 as scheduled.

UEFA is in contact with both clubs to confirm the date of the rescheduled match between AEK Athens FC and GNK Dinamo on either Friday 18 August 2023 or Saturday 19 August 2023.

The previously communicated decision regarding the absence of away fans for both matches remains in place and all necessary measures will be implemented," UEFA said in a statement.
