Atalanta stops at the post, takes a false step in the title race

Atalanta missed a golden opportunity to climb to the top of Serie A after being held to a goalless draw by Venezia. The result leaves Gian Piero Gasperini's side without a win in their last five home matches in all competitions, with three draws and two losses.

With title rivals Inter and Napoli due to face each other later, Atalanta knew that only a win would put them under pressure. However, the match started at a slow pace and a rough game. It took the 20th minute for the first dangerous chance, when Ademola Lookman created space inside the box, but his shot ended up in the outside of the net.

Lookman was the home team's most active player in attack and created another golden opportunity by arching into the area for Mateo Retegui, who found himself free, but his header went over the crossbar. 

Atalanta continued to press for a goal and came very close to opening the scoring, but Davide Zappacosta hit the post with a powerful shot. Luck continued to be against the home side, as Juan Cuadrado also hit the post just before half-time, leaving the Bergamo fans disappointed.

The second half was much the same, with Atalanta constantly attacking the Venezia goal. Cuadrado broke free on the right wing and crossed into the area for Retegui, but the Argentine striker sent the ball over the bar, continuing his disappointing afternoon.

Despite dominating the game and creating numerous chances, Atalanta failed to find the back of the net and remained in third place in the standings, two points behind Inter, ahead of the Nerazzurri's clash with Napoli. Venezia, on the other hand, withstood an unstoppable wave of attacks to take a vital point in the fight for survival, although they remain winless in their last 10 matches.
