Accusations of racism by Vinicius, UEFA announces important decision

UEFA has announced the launch of a disciplinary investigation following the incidents recorded during the Champions League match between Benfica and Real Madrid. An Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to examine allegations of discriminatory behaviour at the Estádio da Luz.

The anti-racism protocol was activated after Vinícius Júnior reported that Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni had used racist insults, a claim that was also reportedly heard by Kylian Mbappé. Prestianni has denied the allegations.

The Ethics Committee will analyze the footage and take testimony from the people involved. The main difficulty is related to the lack of clear visual evidence, as the player is suspected of having covered his mouth during the moment of the debate.

According to Article 14 of UEFA regulations, in such cases sanctions are foreseen starting from a suspension of at least ten matches.
