2025-01-11 15:45:00, Sociale CNA

Over two decades, Gjirokastra has lost more than 28 km of internal cobbled roads.

The functional need of many of the historical segments led to their covering with concrete.

Master stonemasons emigrated to build roads and houses in Greece. It's only been a few years that the sounds of stone carving are making a comeback.

Selam Rondo and his team are repairing a cobblestone street in the city's historic area.

The master admits that this profession is a kind of art and one of the most important values ??of the city.

The technique of building by hand and eye according to the master takes time, requires patience and the secret lies behind the carving of each stone.

"I have been doing this craft for about 15 years. And frankly, it's the craft I like the most. It is cobblestone, plus other constructions, stone walls. We have a family heritage and other family members like Xhemali Rondo have also had this craft. I am also from this tribe. And secondly, since it is a craft that I like, I also give my help to a craft that is about to disappear", says the stone master, Selam Rondo.

Every year, Gjirokastra needs numerous repairs in houses and roads, retaining walls and roofs, but the stone work teams are still few./ CNA
