The Catholic Church has announced on Thursday that Pope Francis has approved the proclamation of 2 more Albanian martyrs, Gjon Gazulli and Luigi Paliq, bringing to 40 the number of clerics killed for their faith. The news was announced by the Albanian Catholic Church, which announces that Pope Francis has authorized his Grace, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Affairs of Saints, to announce the Decrees regarding:

– Martyrdom of the Servant of God Luigi Paliq and Gjon Gazulli. Meanwhile, in 2016, when the other 38 martyrs were announced, these two names were left out of this list because the process was divided into three phases. The fact that the Albanian Catholic Church, a small church in the world, has 40 martyrs is unique.

Luigj Paliq and Gjon Gazulli are a personification of resistance in the face of two different political regimes. Father Luigj Paliq refused to change his identity from Albanian and for this reason the Montenegrins pierced his body with bayonets. Father Gjon Gazulli also had a tragic fate, who was hanged by King Zog because he opposed the discriminatory policies towards Dukagjin.
