"They unanimously elected the successor of the late Archbishop

The Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church has reacted following the election of His Beatitude, Joan, as Archbishop.

The Church's response states that the election of His Beatitude, John, was made by unanimous canonical vote by the members of the Holy Synod.

“ Today, on March 16, 2025, the second Sunday of Lent, dedicated to Saint Gregory Palamas, after the Divine Liturgy and in accordance with the Holy Tradition and the Statute of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, the meeting of the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania was held at the Synodal Center in Tirana for the purpose of electing the new Archbishop. After the prayer, the members of the Holy Synod, under the chairmanship of the Supervisor of the Archbishopric Throne, His Grace Metropolitan of Korça, Bishop Joan, unanimously elected the successor of the late Archbishop Anastasios by canonical votes.

His Grace Metropolitan of Korça, Bishop Joani, was elected Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all of Albania and Primate of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.

Then, in the Cathedral of the “Resurrection of Christ”, the Great Message ceremony took place, where the Holy Synod officially announced the result of the election signed by all the High Priests of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania: the Metropolitans of Korça, Gjirokastra, Apollonia, Elbasan, Berat, Amantia and the Bishop of Kruja. The Orthodox faithful who had filled the cathedral and its courtyard, in an atmosphere of joy and praise to God, shouted “Aksios” (Worthy) for the new Primate of the Church of Albania. Following this, the new Archbishop, His Eminence Joan, read the Great Message and signed it at the Holy Table, officially confirming the acceptance of the high office.

The newly elected Archbishop Ioannis has been a close collaborator of the late Archbishop Anastasios for 32 years, of which 27 years as Metropolitan of Korça. He has distinguished himself for his pastoral work and contribution to the reconstruction of the Church, the development of theological education and the strengthening of the Church's charitable activities. Graduated with excellent results in theological studies in the USA, he returned to Albania to contribute alongside Archbishop Anastasios to the recovery of the destroyed Church of Albania. Since 1993, he has served as a professor at the Theological Academy of Durrës, translator of many theological texts and author of the first text of Dogmatics in the Albanian language. He founded the magazine "Tempulli", represented the Church at inter-Orthodox and inter-Christian meetings and has been honored with prominent titles for his contribution to culture, education and inter-religious dialogue" , the reaction states./ CNA
