The Holy Synod selects the successor of Archbishop Anastasios/ Testament
Archbishop Anastasios, after passing away on January 25 at the age of 95, rested in Albania, in the Orthodox cathedral. In his will, Anastasios Janullatos expressed the desire that an Albanian cleric be elected as the head of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.

This Sunday, the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church will meet to elect his successor. The Synod is composed of seven members, five of whom are Albanians, including the metropolitans of Korça, Berat, Apolonia, Elbasan and Kruja. Two other members, the metropolitans of Amantia and Gjirokastra, are Greek citizens and cannot run for high priest, as they do not meet the condition of Albanian nationality stipulated by the Statute approved in 2006.

The election of the new Archbishop is a process that will take place after the Divine Liturgy, where the members of the Synod will vote for one of the Albanian metropolitans. The most talked about name for this position is that of His Grace Ioannis of Korça, who after the death of Anastasios took over the temporary leadership of the Church. In this process, it is also expected that a public message will be announced by the new Archbishop and religious ceremonies will begin with the announcement of his name and the ringing of bells in the cathedrals and churches of Albania.

Archbishop Anastasios has had a great influence on the revival and strengthening of the Orthodox Church in Albania, leading the religious institution for more than three decades, especially in the period after the fall of the atheist communist regime, when many churches were destroyed and religious faith was persecuted. After his death, many believers and members of the Church are focused on finding a successor who will continue his mission and lead the Church into a new era. /CNA
