Birth rate at historically low level in Albania/ Interest in fertility methods,

Albania has set another negative demographic record. According to data for 2024, only 22,425 babies were born in the country, registering a 5% drop compared to 2023, the lowest birth rate since 1934.

In an interview with CNA TV, renowned gynecologist Sofika Xhelilaj said that the decline in fertility is a direct consequence of economic insecurity, and the postponement of the decision to have children by many women. Meanwhile, at the Vlora Regional Hospital, so far, there have been 65 births for 2025.

Another worrying aspect that is increasingly being observed, according to specialist doctors, are the increasing cases of couples facing difficulties in getting pregnant. The first signs that signal this problem include irregular menstrual cycles or lack of ovulation, severe pain during periods, abnormal secretions or pain during intimate relations, symptoms that are often related to problems such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome.

In parallel with the decline in natural fertility, there has been an increase in interest in modern fertility methods, such as in vitro fertilization or egg freezing.

In conditions where the birth rate in the country is showing a continuous decline, it is necessary to focus attention not only on supporting young families, but also on facilitating access to fertility services. As specialists emphasize, early identification of signs of difficulties in becoming pregnant and timely treatment can make the difference for many couples. Therefore, in addition to long-term policies, awareness and health education for young people also play an important role. /CNA
