Sex can trigger asthma attacks, a study has found.

Too much exertion in the bedroom can lead to breathing problems for sufferers - around 5.4 million Britons.

That's something we already know, but scientists at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology said other warnings may be understated.

Dr Ariel Leung said: “Many people do not realize that the energy expenditure of sexual activity is almost equivalent to walking two flights of stairs.

"Reported cases are rare, perhaps because those who suffer from an asthma flare-up may not understand the trigger."

Researchers looked for case reports and found that some people had allergic reactions to sperm or latex in condoms.

They added that some "postcoital asthma exacerbations" are caused by physical exertion in the bedroom.

Exercise can trigger attacks because heavy breathing makes the air cooler and drier, which irritates the lungs and causes them to swell.

Dr Leung estimated that between 40 and 90 percent of asthmatics suffer symptoms or attacks when they exercise.

Study co-author Dr AM Aminian added: "Another possible cause of under-reporting of this condition is the intimate nature of the subject./CNA.al
