The risk of developing ovarian cancer appears to increase about fourfold among women with endometriosis (cyst), compared to women who have not been diagnosed with the condition, a new study finds

Scientists have known that endometriosis may be associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer, but the study details how this risk may vary by subtype of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a common and often painful condition that occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus itself. It is estimated to affect more than 11% of women ages 15 to 44 across the United States.

According to the study women with severe forms or deep infiltrating endometriosis, ovarian endometrioma or both, have an overall risk of ovarian cancer that is "significantly increased", about 9.7 times higher, compared to women without endometriosis.

About 1.1% of women in the US will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer at some point in their lives, according to the National Cancer Institute. This year, it is estimated that there will be nearly 20 thousand new cases of ovarian cancer and about 13 thousand people are expected to die due to this disease./CNA
