World No Tobacco Day/ Psychologists in Shkodra raise the alarm, 40% of high

Almost half of the young people in high schools in Shkodra are tobacco consumers, while this phenomenon, according to psychologists, has also spread significantly to 9-year schools. In an awareness-raising activity organized at the “28 Nëntori” high school on World No Tobacco Day, psychologist Fatjon Taipi said that over 40% of students are smokers based on statistics.

" The activity 'Tobacco, the path to evil' is more than a warning. It is a call that we make to youth for a healthy life. We call on them to live free from addictions that harm not only the body but also the mind ," said Jetina.

A message was also given by the regional director of the Healthcare Operator in Shkodra, Visar Jetina.

" Smoking among high school students is a problem and has also started among 9-year school students. It is a very worrying problem due to the fact that they are not aware of the damage caused by smoking. In a study we conducted, over 40% of students declared that they themselves or their friends smoke. Of course, it is a very high figure because half of high school students use tobacco ," said Taipi.

A problem that is increasingly spreading among young people is their use of electronic cigarettes.

Shkodër OSHKSH specialist, Jozefina Delia, said that a major problem recently is the use of electronic cigarettes.

"Recently, a major problem in our society is the widespread use of electronic cigarettes. This is a new form that is related to the false myth that they are not harmful, but in fact they are more harmful than tobacco itself ," said Delia.

The students themselves indicate that tobacco consumption among their ranks is increasingly a problem.

" Smoking is a very worrying problem nowadays because many young people consume tobacco, now even children to a large extent, and what I wanted to tell them is STOP smoking because it is very harmful," said a student.

"This activity is to raise awareness not only of smokers who cause harm but also of what is called passive smoking, the harm they cause to others," said another student.

May 31st is known as World No Tobacco Day with the aim of raising awareness about the dangers of its use and taking measures to reduce smoking.

In the world, there are approximately 8 million people who lose their lives every year from smoking, while in Albania this figure is estimated at approximately 5 thousand people per year who die due to smoking./ CNA
