The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj hosted the Parliamentary Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, Niels Annen.
He thanked the official of the German government for the support to the Municipality of Tirana for one of the important projects, such as that of public transport.
"I informed the German Secretary of State about all our cooperation with KFË and the German GIZ, especially in the field of public transport. We just went through a campaign where we had debates about public transport. We are not here to just win votes and then face a situation of promises that cannot be kept. We are here to tell the truth, what can and cannot be done. For what can be done, let's start doing it. What we can do, and we have agreed with GIZ and KFHE, is to start a rapid public transport system. For this, I want to thank the German government, the German embassy, ??our GIZ and KFË team, because we had an extraordinary cooperation to bring it to this point and now we have to start implementing it", said Veliaj.
Another important project that the mayor highlighted is the reconstruction of the dormitories.
"I want to thank you very much for the dormitories. An initiative that started with Mrs. Merkel, when she visited Tirana. Today it is a pleasure to tell you that half of them are finished, we have the other half. I am really very grateful, because it has been a burden for the Municipality of Tirana in the sense that the dormitories are mostly used by students who do not come from Tirana. It is very important that a donor helps us to make sure that we offer students a super infrastructure, and the Municipality of Tirana pays half of it, as it also pays the subscription for students, because I believe that for a student the weight of prices and the energy crisis, as well as the weight of the cost of living is felt more. Your precious help for the dormitories makes it easier for us to treat the students who come to Tirana in a dignified way,
The German Secretary of State, for his part, said that he was impressed by what he saw in this visit to the Albanian capital.
"I have come here to talk to the Albanian government, as well as other Western Balkan governments, about our approach to a more stable region, and I believe that this will improve living standards in Albania. But the crucial question always remains, how do big cities fit into this? So, we are really impressed by your direction. I think you have shown some important aspects of your daily life, which increase sustainability and make a contribution to the goals we have set", said Niels Annen./ CNA.al
