Varhelyi gives the good news: You can become part of the EU sooner

The EU Enlargement Commissioner, Oliver Varhelyi, gave details of the economic growth plan during the EU-Western Balkans Summit. 

During the conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, he said that Europe is very bureaucratic, but I think that this time we have the opportunity to show the direct economic benefits of a country. He underlined that the countries of the Western Balkans can be ready faster to became part of the EU. 

"I want to share a secret. The idea of ??the growth plan was mainly conceived in Tirana in previous discussions we had with Prime Minister Rama and other leaders of the region. It is not only the EU's idea, but it was also the idea of ??the entire region. We are talking about what we will implement from this plan for this year. This work is continuing and we continue the discussions about what should be done. Today has been a great encouragement to move forward. Waiting for trucks is eliminated and we can save even more time. These are the things that people need to feel, touch and see. These are the innovations of this plan. Europe is very bureaucratic, but I think this time we have the opportunity to show the direct economic benefits of a country. Your region can get ready to join the EU faster. These countries are starting to apply these rules today," he said.

According to him, until 2027, the region will receive the same aid intensity as that of European countries, worth 6 billion euros.  

"Most of the reforms have their financial cost, but we are ready to mitigate the cost, so the EC leaders have decided 6 billion euros to help the region. This is the amount of funds given to member countries. Until 2027, the region will receive the same aid intensity. After 2027, it would be difficult for the region to say we are not ready yet. In 10 years, the region must double its economy", he said.
