Salmonella chicken scandal/ Denaj: AKU will be dissolved

Minister of Agriculture, Anila Denaj, in an interview with MCN TV, spoke about the scandal of imported chicken meat, which resulted in salmonella.

Denaj said that institutions are still conducting investigations and tracing the products, but this process has had difficulties.

" In Albania, there have been concerns about imported products, especially chicken meat from Brazil, which have been found to contain salmonella. These products come with veterinary certificates that ensure animal health and food safety. However, after an analysis of the load of chicken fillet that entered the Durrës customs point, the presence of salmonella was found. The analyses were carried out by laboratories accredited by the European Union.

Relevant institutions, including the AKU, are conducting investigations and have found that some of the shipments are still in the traceability process. Importing businesses are obliged to inform if a product has been contaminated and to interrupt the supply chain. In the case of this shipment, there were difficulties in fully tracing the products, and for this reason, other investigations have also been involved, including those by the police and the prosecution.

Furthermore, reports from the European Food Safety Authority have highlighted an increase in salmonella cases, with a significant increase in infections from previous years. This case highlights the need for strict controls and international cooperation in ensuring food safety ,” said Denaj.

 

Denaj further said that according to the law adopted in September 2024, the NFA will be merged and merged with the food inspectorates, creating a single institution.

 

" In September last year, a law was passed that will be implemented by the end of the year, with all the legal acts that the inspectorates will be reorganized, the AKU will be merged and will join all the food inspectorates. All of them will create an institution that will implement its policies, for fishing, for plants, animal products and will not depend on a general director, nor on the minister, but on an entire system, because we cannot manage only with people, but with three levels of monitoring ," said Denaj./ CNA
