Safet Gjici, the mayor of Kukës, said that the departures from Kukës have been for years, especially in England, since Albania is a free country and everyone wants the best.

In an interview for Euroneës Albania, he denied that Kukësi is depopulating, while emphasizing that hundreds of Kukësi have returned to Albania where they have invested by opening their own businesses.

"There is no depopulation of Kukes, this is a term used by those who have done nothing for 30 years, it is an anti-Albanian term. You cannot talk about depopulation. If you come to Kukës, there are many people who work. Obviously, the situation is not where it should be, a lot of work needs to be done", said Gjici.

He emphasized that currently the municipality of Kukes has won a British project of 8 million pounds that is entirely dedicated to young people. According to Gjici, around 300-400 young people are expected to be employed by this project, which starts its implementation in October.
