"Albanians in Britain are not statistics"/ Rama hits back at British

Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded to British MP Nigel Farage after his reaction with figures regarding Albanians in prisons in Great Britain.

In his response on the 'X' platform, Rama writes that Albanians in Britain are not a statistic that should be distorted for political theater after Brexit.

Rama writes that numbers are not the MP's strong point and invites him to come to Tirana.

"Dear Nigel Farage,

My Catholic grandmother, may God rest her soul, reminded me of the Latin proverb: Errare humanum est, sed perseverare diabolicum. I think it goes something like this: To err is human, but to persist in error is diabolical.

So, instead of bothering the already busy Home Secretary, perhaps you should let me know when I can welcome you to Tirana, as an honored guest. Because, dear Nigel, numbers are clearly not your strong point and so let's be clear - YOU LOSE.

Your "census" of Albanians in Britain is particularly ridiculous. You claim there are 53,000. In reality, the number is much higher - many times that. But let's stick to your source: The Telegraph, which was the first to trumpet the "one in 50" theory, and later admitted it:

"The analysis likely underestimated the size of the Albanian population as it does not take into account illegal migrants, including more than 12,000 who arrived in small boats in 2022. Some estimates suggest the true Albanian population could be as low as 140,000 - meaning fewer than one in 100 are in prison."

Now, as for the prison population, here's a more important question: how many of them have actually been convicted of crimes unrelated to your outdated immigration and visa system?

Yes, numbers can be boring—but they're also stubborn. And when someone keeps getting them wrong, the real question is: Why keep going? Because honestly, being a jerk seems beneath even your usual style.

Albanians in Britain are not a statistic to be twisted for post-Brexit political theatre, Mr Farage. They are students, academics, builders, drivers, business owners and partners. And if one in a thousand fails, that does not make the crowd a scapegoat for your national confusion.

We have stood shoulder to shoulder with the UK government in dramatically reducing illegal migration and cracking down on crime. The real numbers prove this and that is called cooperation. But "one in 50 Albanians in UK prisons"? That is not a fact - that is called a post-Brexit illusion.

"I look forward to welcoming you to Albania as we promised, to share lots of wonderful sunshine, warm hospitality and true facts," Rama wrote. /CNA
