"We wrote letters with a typewriter"/ Rama recalls history as Minister

Prime Minister Edi Rama was present today at the presentation of the winners of Start-up and Startup Grant2024, where he also focused on the impact of technological changes on work processes.

Rama recalled an episode from the time he was minister of culture, in 1998.

The Prime Minister spoke about the state of affairs at the time in the ministries' offices, when documents were written by hand and often processed with typewriters.

Rama said that he had to write a letter to the German Bank, asking them to send him some computer equipment that was being held at an exhibition.

"I remember when I became Minister of Culture, in 1998, there was an office in the ministry that was the typing office where handwritten or spoken documents went, and there were three employees who typed on three tired machines, starting with the letter ë, which was invented with internal forces because the original machine didn't have it, the machine that made ë made holes.

I had fresh memories of an exhibition in Germany at a cultural center where computers had arrived that Deutsche Bank was decommissioning and donating to cultural centers that didn't have any. I wrote a letter to the bank director and asked him if it was possible to give us some computers too.

"Then the German Embassy contacted us and they brought us some computers. At that time, that letter ended up on the bank director's wall because it was unthinkable," Rama said. /CNA
