Trump's return, the impact on Albania/ Andoni: The focus will be on US
Ben Andoni

Donald Trump returns to the post of president of the United States, a country whose governing policies have had a great impact on Albania in many areas.

Dozens of executive orders have been signed in the first 24 hours by Trump, and many more are expected to follow, including on economic and political issues.

But how much will Albania be affected and what might it face? In an interview with CNA TV, journalist Ben Andoni said that currently, apart from Kosovo, neither Albania nor other countries in the region should expect radical changes.

"At this moment, Trump is still continuing with the procedure of the first executive orders that justify all his work in the electoral campaign. So far, executive acts almost do not include Albania, except for one executive order related to our country and the region. The 90-day suspension of American aid provided through structures such as USAID. This affects Kosovo more than Albania. With this decision, it is not that aid is being interrupted, but rather that a reassessment is being made, in line with Mr. Trump's platform for the future of his foreign policy. Kosovo, in addition to the American aid already blocked for 90 days, will be and continues to be limited and there are austerity measures from EU countries, it is a considerable figure that will affect its economy, economic indicators, but above all in the perception that in Kosovo and Albania being American is in very high grades. I think that with the other executive orders we are still not seeing what America thinks about our region.

"Most of American policy will be based on two pillars. The first is immigration, and we have controlled immigration in the US, and the second is related to energy, but our country, due to its economic baggage, its small GDP, the import-export exchange that we have with the US, is almost negligible."

Regarding the political aspect and the situation in Albania and Kosovo, two countries that are on the verge of parliamentary elections, Andoni emphasized that nothing has changed.

"In Kosovo, the greatest predisposition is that Mr. Kurti will win again and politics will continue as it did in his first mandate, and on the other hand, Mr. Rama has been in power for three terms and in all likelihood, with the way the opposition is behaving, it is not surprising that he will also get a fourth term. In this sense, seeing the US engagement no longer in Europe but mainly in North America on issues such as immigration and the Panama Canal, the US attention to our region will be peripheral.

When you consider the fact that the US does not send an ambassador to Albania, it is easy to understand the importance of Albania in the wider political arena. We had an enviable position during the war in Kosovo because at that time our foreign policy coincided to some extent with that of the US. At this moment, the problem of the Albanians is over. The number of KFOR troops in Kosovo has already increased."

Will it take time for the Trump administration to get used to Albania?

"Whether the individuals who are expected to approach Albania, or even in the region, have the right information. Changes are made at high levels, the bureaucratic positions of those who prepare the files are the same and only the matrix of the presidential power stance changes. I believe that the US will restore the old agreement signed in the Oval Office between Trump-Vu?i? and Trump-Hoti."

What is the biggest change that Albanians can see with the arrival of Trump?

"Trump is more direct and has no complexes about announcing good relations with Serbia or problems with other countries, good relations with Albania. With the new arrival of Trump, I believe we will see an approach that will not differ from that of Mr. Biden." /CNA
