From Adem Jashari, to Bill Clinton and George Bush/ Berisha's message for
Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha

Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha gave a message for Kosovo on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of Independence.

Berisha honored the nation's heroes, as well as expressed gratitude for Ibrahim Rugova, KLA fighters and former presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush.

He said that DP became the main support of the Democratic League of Kosovo, while with its coming to power, Albania became the main promoter of the issue of Albanians in Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and everywhere.

The head of the DP stated that Albania did everything in support of the Kosovo issue becoming an issue at international summits, in the biggest offices of Europe and the world.

Excerpt from the statement:

Dear friends, today in the history of the nation is one of the greatest days, it is the independence day of Kosovo.

It is the day that made the Albanian nation free after centuries and centuries. We are a nation with two birthdays of freedom. We are a nation with two independence dates. November 28, 1912, the independence of Albania, without which there would be no Albanian state, there would be no independent Kosovo.

In addition, we have February 17, 2008, the next birthday of national freedom, the independence of Kosovo, without which the Albanians would not be a free nation, they would not enjoy national freedom.

Therefore, today let us express our great pride, our boundless gratitude to the architect of Kosovo's independence, the wise man of the nation, the Gandhi of the Balkans and Europe, President Ibrahim Rugova.

Let us express the greatest respect to the legendary commander, Adem Jashari. To the freedom fighters of the KLA, who with epic courage fought the brightest fight in the history of Albanians for freedom and dignity since the time of Skënderbeu.

Unlimited gratitude to the North Atlantic Alliance, our partners, President Bill Clinton and George Bush, for their defining role in Kosovo's independence. But my friends, every democrat has a sense of pride today, because this party was founded in December 1990, as the party that declared the polar star, the national issue.

He declared the national issue, betrayed for 50 years by the Albanian Communist Party, a section of the Yugoslav Communist Party, a polar star. It declared the national issue a polar star, at a time when Albanians in the surrounding countries were surviving as the most oppressed beings in Europe. But we could not be the true party of the Albanians, if we did not announce the right cause for the freedom and dignity of the Albanians as the main cause of our program.

My friends, the only strength was our ideals. The only strength at that time was the belief in Albanian truths. DP became the main support of the Democratic League of Kosovo. With its coming to power, Albania became the main promoter of the issue of Albanians in Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and everywhere.

The government of Kosovo, its parallel power, President Ibrahim Rugova, but also the people who started the liberation war, Adem Jashari and other freedom fighters, had Albania as their main support. We never backed down under any circumstances, on the contrary, we did everything in support of the Kosovo issue becoming an issue at international summits, in the biggest offices of Europe and the world.

It would be the resolution sponsored by Albania at the UN in 1994, voted by 137 countries, which recognized the right of self-determination to the people of Kosovo, which would constitute the international law for the Rambouillet Agreement and for all other international acts that brought the independence of Kosovo.

DP unwaveringly supported the liberation war, with the motto 'one nation, one attitude'. We gave an irreplaceable help to the Albanians in Kosovo in their battle. The truth is, the independence of Kosovo, which rests on the blood, the sacrifice of tens, hundreds of thousands of freedom fighters, the invincible spirit, the wars from 860 to 990 of its citizens, was announced in Tirana by President George Bush.

Therefore, I want to convey to that great friend of the nation on this day, the warmest greetings. I also want to express my gratitude to the North Atlantic Alliance, its member countries, to President Clinton who led the air battle against Milosevic.

My friends, Kosovo comes in these 16 years, the freest country in the region. Kosovo comes in these 16 years, the country with the most consolidated democracy, its citizens vote freely. Its governments are accountable to the citizens and are elected by free vote.
