Ban on combustion engines in 2035/ Italy and Germany against EU plan

German Transport Minister Volker Wissing said his country would not formally back a negotiated deal to end carbon emissions from new cars and vans by 2035, only if a proposal to use fuels is presented by the European Commission.

Following the Italian government, the German transport minister's statements cast doubt on the agreement on CO2 limits for cars and vans, which was approved in the European Parliament two weeks ago.

Germany can support the deal only "if the Commission makes a proposal" on how vehicles with internal combustion engines running only on synthetic fuels can be registered even after 2035, Wissing told reporters.

"The European Commission must offer to enable the registration of vehicles with combustion engines even after 2035. We need all options, including battery electric, hydrogen and combustion engines that work on fuel," said Minister Wissing. /CNA.al
