Rama honored with medal in Israel

Prime Minister Edi Rama, during his speech during his visit to Israel, where he was also honored with an award by President Isaac Herzog, also spoke about the political reality in the Middle East region. At the beginning of his speech, Rama recalled how Albanians stood in aid of the Jewish people during World War II.
Rama stressed that Albania has always been supportive of the two-state solution, but in his view, there is no solution with Hamas.
Rama said that Hamas is not a resistance movement and that they are the Nazis of the new century.
The full speech of Prime Minister Edi Rama:
"Mr. President, I find it particularly difficult to find words. Faced with such a surprise, I don't have a word here, I only have a few points to discuss."
So I will try to say a few heartfelt words, starting with a very sincere thought, that this extraordinary honor cannot be for me alone, but I accept it on behalf of Albania, on behalf of the Albanian people, and above all, on behalf of all Albanians, Muslim and Christian, who put themselves and their lives at risk during the darkest hours of modern history and turned my country into the only country in Europe that ended World War II with more Jews than at its beginning.
Unlike other countries, Albania became a refuge for the Jewish people and unlike other countries, the Jews did not leave, but came to find shelter, to find protection and to be safe. I cannot help but recall here one of the many episodes, of that glorious page of our history, when all the religious leaders were summoned by the Nazis to give them access to hand over the Albanian gold and the list of Jews and they immediately said: “You can take the gold, but the Jews are ours, we will protect them”. And they did not cooperate with the Nazis and no one did this.
There are two Jews on the list of people interned in Germany from all over the world, but they are not actually Jews. They are two Albanians who were the sons of an Albanian family, who hid two Jews and when the Nazis went to get them, the old man of the house said, "wait at the door," because he was going to hand them over, and he handed them over his two sons, who ended up in Bergen-Belsen and never came back, and they never said that they were not the Jews they were supposed to protect.
Our history of World War II is filled with such episodes and at the same time it is a testimony that I hold very dear to my heart for the entire future generation that is about protecting the other, regardless of his or her religious beliefs. And yes, Albania is a country with a Muslim majority, but that was one of the reasons why the Nazis could not reach the Jews, because the Muslims were their strongest shield.
In an effort to build on this history, we are doing everything we can to speak out against anti-Semitism. We have passed all the legislation against anti-Semitism and we have promoted the teaching of the Jewish Holocaust, integrating it into our school curriculum, because it is our unwavering belief that this is not about the Jews. This is about our humanity. On the other hand, as we speak, we are building two Jewish centers; a Jewish museum in Vlora, where the Jews were settled, and a Jewish cultural center in Tirana, where once again the story of the salvation of the Jews is integrated, but at the same time we want to give space to the present and the future, we want to have as much as possible a relationship with Israel and with the Jewish people, starting from the level of the tourists you mentioned. I feel sorry for them, because they flew to Albania on April 2. They were told on April 1st and the Prime Minister was given a dinner and they thought it was a joke from Sundor. From this level, then, to the level of your wonderful scientists and wonderful people of technology and your wonderful industries.
I want to reiterate here that, as it has been, not only during World War II, but three times in history, - a land where Jews found refuge and protection, - Albania will always be your second home and you will always be welcome in Albania.
We strongly hope that in this new time, we will be able to build something, not as extraordinary as what our grandparents did, but in the same spirit of brotherhood and cooperation, and we stand firmly by Israel's side, in this difficult and painful moment, where there are still people in the medieval basements of Hamas.
As I have said before, and I want to repeat it now, Albania has always been supportive of the two-state solution, but in my view and in our view, there is no solution with Hamas there and contrary to what others have tried to say, Hamas is not a resistance movement. Hamas are the Nazis of the new century.
History has taught us that there is no peace with Nazis, there is no compromise with Nazis.
Wishing you all the best, the people of Israel, the entire region, and looking forward to seeing peace between Jews and Arabs, I remain truly grateful forever, for this moment of my life, which I am sure I do not deserve as a person, but which I am sure that all Albanians who have done something for the Jews deserved this moment, "said Rama./CNA
