The head of the DP Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, denounced in the Assembly the issue of toxic waste that has been sent to China and Thailand and is returning to the port of Durrës.

In the interview with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Bardhi said that there are serious doubts that Albania has violated the Basel Convention.

He stated that in the case of hazardous waste, we are dealing with a criminal activity.

The head of the DP Parliamentary Group asked to know who allowed the waste to leave the port of Durrës and who should be held responsible.

"On August 8, 2024, 3 organizations denounced the fact that two ships departing from the Port of Durrës were transporting hazardous waste to Thailand. When the latter learned that the ships had left the port of Durrës, it refused to accept them.

Currently, according to public information, the 2 ships are returning to the port of Durrës. The American organization has expressed to prestigious media that it is convinced that the Port of Durrës has been used to illegally extract hazardous toxic waste in several Asian countries.

A material coming out of the chimneys of metallurgical factories has been transported. According to information, shipments of this nature are made regularly from the port of Durrës. The ash transported belongs to 'Sokolaj' Sh.pk, licensed by this company, and the waste belongs to 'Kurum'.

Several tons of hazardous waste have been shipped from the port of Durrës and are expected to be returned. Regarding this issue, there have been several reactions of the responsible institutions. There are serious doubts that Albania has violated the Basel Convention, which regulates the trade of dangerous countries. Countries like Albania are not allowed to transport hazardous waste. This shows that we are not dealing with an isolated event, but with a criminal activity.
