The Minister of Education and Sports, Ogerta Manastirliu, together with the Rector of the University of Tirana, Artan Hoxha, the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Eglantina Kalluçi, professors and students, inspected the Computing Center of the Department of Physics and the Chemistry Laboratory at the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The focus of the visit was the significant investment in laboratory infrastructure, a funding from the Ministry of Education and Sports, through the National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation, has established a modern high-performance computing center. This investment is expected to have a significant impact on the development of scientific research in Albania.
During the inspection, Minister Manastirliu emphasized the importance of this center for Albanian researchers and the impact it will have in various fields of scientific research:
"This empowerment that has taken place today in this computing center by equipping the entire computer network with High Performance Computing, which is the right equipment to process data series in various fields of scientific research through artificial intelligence, undoubtedly brings innovation, whether in health, energy, or civil emergencies, so these are all directions that I am convinced that in cooperation with our experts, with our professors, with scientific researchers, and above all with the expertise that comes from CERN and from the program that you have already been part of, it will be a leap forward towards the development of scientific research and innovation in our country.", said Minister Manastirliu, underlining that this center is closely linked to the participation of Albanian researchers in the European Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) project at CERN and the membership of Albanian institutions in this important scientific project.
In addition to helping advance scientific research, this center also offers opportunities for other HEIs, research institutes, public entities, non-governmental organizations, and businesses to carry out specialized projects in data analysis and scientific simulations.
"This is the first laboratory of its kind to have this High Performance Computing and I am convinced that from the point of view of modeling, not only in terms of scientific aspects, but also social aspects, because even linguistic models, all of these, can be modeled through this laboratory and this infrastructure that is already installed. Therefore, we need to further strengthen the connection between our universities, just as the University of Tirana and the Polytechnic University are already doing, but also with other universities, in order to utilize these capacities that we have for all study cycles, but also beyond study cycles, for science as a whole", said Minister Manastirliu.
Through this center, which relies on the most advanced High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence technologies, Albanian researchers will have the opportunity to compete at the same level with their European counterparts. /CNA
