Malaj tells the story/ How Fatos Nano refused to escape from prison, the role of
Former prime ministers Fatos Nano and Bashkim Fino

The former Socialist Minister of Finance, Arben Malaj, spoke this Friday about the former Prime Minister Fatos Nano, who is in the hospital due to lung problems.

Malaj went back in time and remembered the moment when Nano was in prison on charges of corruption and abuse of office by the court, in the years 1992-1997.

He said that at that time the former prime minister's life was in danger, but he refused to escape.

The former minister confessed that in order to get Nano out of prison, lawyer Spartak Ngjela and former prime minister Bashkim Fino played an important role, who convinced Sali Berisha to grant an amnesty.

" I must appreciate that Ngjela has made an extraordinary contribution, because Nano was seriously endangered in prison. Nano sent the message that he will not leave prison unless he receives amnesty. Actually picking up Nano from prison to take him home is very well explained by the RENEA group, the situation was out of control... it was his non-negotiable insistence not to escape. In this case Bashkim Fino and Spartak Ngjela convinced Berisha for amnesty.

The most difficult moment was September '98, after the murder of Azem Hajdari. Nano's 'head' was wanted, and we decided that he had to flee from the prime minister's office and we would continue the 'war' there. The guard had fallen, we were worried, and the advice was not to kill people in popular protests, and this led to them entering the prime minister ", stated Malaj in an interview with Ola Bruko./ CNA
